This Greek Yogurt Caramelized Onion Dip is a creamy, lighter take on classic French onion dip. Perfect for parties, potlucks, or game day!

This Greek Yogurt Caramelized Onion Dip is my healthier spin on a classic French onion dip. It has all the savoury, onion-forward flavour you expect, but swaps the usual sour cream and mayo base for Greek yogurt to keep things a bit more balanced while still being creamy and satisfying. If you love crowd-pleasing dips like my Baked Feta Cheese with Cranberries and my Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip, this one is another option that's guaranteed to disappear fast.

Caramelizing the onions is what really makes this dip shine. Taking the extra time to let them soften and deepen in flavour adds that rich, slightly sweet taste that makes French onion dip so delicious. Once they're mixed into the yogurt with a few simple seasonings, you end up with a creamy, flavourful dip! This is the kind of recipe that works just as well for summer potlucks and game day spreads as it does for a simple snack plate at home.

Why This Recipe Is Dietitian Approved

    1. Lower fat option. Using Greek yogurt instead of a traditional sour cream and mayo base keeps this dip lighter while still being creamy and satisfying.
    2. Great for potlucks or game day. This dip is crowd-pleasing, easy to make ahead, and holds up well when served cold, making it ideal for sharing.
    3. Minimal prep. The onions take the most time, but the rest of the recipe comes together quickly with simple, pantry-friendly ingredients.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for caramelized onion dip including onion, Greek yogurt, spices, worcestershire sauce, and chives

Onions. I recommend using yellow onions or spanish opinions for the perfect caramelized onions!

Oil. Avocado oil, olive oil or any neutral flavor cooking oil of choice (butter will also work for a more traditional rich and creamy taste)

Greek yogurt. I typically use 2% plain Greek yogurt for the perfect blend between a lower fat option, while still being creamy! Note the higher the fat content the more rich and creamy the dip will be

Worcestershire. A key ingredient to add a depth of flavour to this dip!

Spices. garlic powder, black pepper, thyme and salt are all you need!

Balsamic vinegar. For a slight tang, the acid in the vinegar is crucial to help bringing the flavours of this dip together

Chives. Optional but this adds a little colour (and extra flavour) you can use fresh or dried chives!

    Substitutions and Variations

To make gluten-free: Worcestershire sauce is not always gluten free! I recommend checking the packaging before using it!

To make vegan: Worcestershire sauce is not vegan as it contains anchovies however you might be able to find a vegan substitute! You will also need to use a vegan yogurt option.

To make dairy-free: Use a dairy free thick yogurt option!

To make nut-free: This recipe is naturally nut free!

If you prefer a creamier dip you can substitute some of the yogurt with a bit of mayonnaise! Play around with the ratios and find what works best for you.

    Storage

These caramelized onion dip can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days!

    Top Tips for Success

For easy dipping I recommend slicing the onions in half (or even quarters) before thinly slicing! The longer the pieces of onion are the harder they will be to scoop up with a cracker!

    Cuisine: American
    Keyword: Make Ahead, Sides
    Servings: 10

    Ingredients

    • 2 yellow onions (or 1 large spanish onion), halved and thinly sliced(or diced small)
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1.5 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
    • 4 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
    • 2 cups plain 2% Greek yogurt
    • 2 tablespoon chives (fresh or freeze dried)

    Instructions

    • To a large pan over medium, high heat add the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add sliced onions, saute, stirring frequently until the onions are soft (about 5 minutes).
    • After 5 minutes, add the garlic powder, salt, black pepper, thyme and balsamic vinegar. Continue to saute, stirring frequently until caramelized (about 10 minutes).
    • After 10 minutes, add the worcestershire sauce and cook for an additional 5 minutes until fragrant. Add onions to a bowl and set aside to cool.
    • Once cool, stir the onions into the yogurt, adjust spices to desired tastes and top with chives.

    Notes

Greek yogurt tends to be a bit more sour than a traditional mayo/ sour cream dip base. If you are finding it too sour, add in 1-2 tablespoon of mayonnaise.
For even MORE flavour add ½ a package of onion soup mix when you mix the onions into the yogurt!
